The IPCC experts confirm: with 95% confidence „human influence on climate caused more than half the observed increase in global average surface temperatures from 1951-2010”. Warming in the climate system is unequivocal. According to the scientists, global surface temperature change for the end of the century is likely to exceed 1,5°C, and may reach 2°C. Moreover, the pause in warming observed over the past 15 years is too short to reflect long-term trends, and may be a result of periodic cooling of Pacific ocean which was counteracting the impact of the extra carbon in the atmosphere.
The scientists warn that climate changes pose a dire threat to humanity. They anticipate an increase in intensity of extreme weather conditions such as heat waves, torrential rains and disastrous droughts. The mean level of global sea is going to rise faster than in the recent 40 years. Further emissions of greenhouse gases will cause further worming and changes in every aspect of global climate system. To counteract the most severe consequences of climate change substantial and sustained reductions of greenhouse gas emissions are necessary.
The Final Draft of the Working Group I report will be released online on Monday 30 September, next parts will be published until November 2014.
